I’m going to let you in on a little secret…
What I love the most about consulting, teaching, and mentoring is how much I learn myself. It’s almost like getting paid to discover new things!
It’s similar to parenting… I am constantly blown away by how much more my kids teach me about life and about myself than I ever feel like I teach them!
You see, you’ll never hear me say I know everything.
In fact, I don’t consider myself a highly intellectual individual. Actually, I didn’t do very well in school at all.
But I’m an avid student of life, marketing, business, and people, and I’m always trying to learn; I’m constantly observing, paying attention to reactions, results, and opportunities.
I’ve never, and don’t ever plan to in the future, walked into a business thinking I know everything and can solve all of their problems. I think anyone who claims to do so is naïve – especially when we live in a world packed with constant change.
It reminds me of an argument I had with a graphic designer about a year and a half ago, before I had my own agency. I was hiring him to make me a website, and we were debating what the home page above the fold should be. (Above the fold is the stuff you see without scrolling). He wanted X, and I suggested we test X, Y, Z and let the market decide. He argued that “his experience” allowed him to know what to put, without the need to test. When I insisted, he got very irate and took it very personally. Listen, it’s not about “knowing”, it’s about testing. And this is my biggest pet-peeve with graphic designers who don’t understand diddly-squat about marketing.
Testing is marketing 101.
Anyhow…
When I walk into a new business, I always have the same approach, I give the business a thorough CAT-scan and go from there. I look at what’s working, and I do more of it. I look at what’s not working, and either make it work or get rid of it. I look at what’s being overlooked, and find a way to utilize it.
Once we’ve got something working, I formulate a type of “secondary line” and test, test, test, and continually improve the results we’re getting.
Notice I said “secondary line”… First rule of manufacturing is never implement anything onto your main line until you know it works, or you risk ruining the whole thing.
Then, once things are moving along great, I systematize and automate as much as I can so it becomes steady, ongoing streams of income.
The point is, I’m in a constant state of curiosity, of learning, and I soak everything in…but it doesn’t end there.
I then APPLY.
You see, there’s a HUGE difference between incredible knowledge and the ability to apply it.
And I’d take someone who can apply over someone with knowledge 100 days out of 100.
It’s easy to take a person of action, give them some direction and “watch them go.” It’s far harder to take someone of great knowledge and “get them to do something!”
I laugh at people who brag about reading a zillion books a day, yet aren’t doing the very things they read about. It’s not how many books you can read – it’s how much you can apply the things you learned that truly matters.
Don’t get me wrong here… I’m an avid reader. But I’m an even bigger fan of APPLICATION. Or, ACTION.
There was a time when I used to hear employers say “there aren’t any real go-getters out there anymore” and they may have been right. But today, when being an entrepreneur is the cool thing, there are go-getters everywhere.
Heck, the world is full of so-called go-getters. Everyone’s going to be the next big thing, crush their goals, live the lap-top life, travel the world and live free. Especially on social media, everyone’s a go-getter.
What we are truly lacking is go-doers.
I sincerely believe that if you just did more things than anyone else, you’d win. You’d come out on top. You’d have the upper hand.
When you’re doing, you’re learning. And until you DO, you truly don’t KNOW.
It’s like paper-trading vs real life – it just doesn’t count (for those who understand stocks).
Now, before I wrap this up, let’s make one thing real clear… Action does need some direction. Busy work doesn’t count as action. Busy work is exactly that, work that keeps you busy – but doesn’t necessarily move you forward in your business or life.
I challenge you to become a go-doer, someone who lives for ACTION.
When I was just starting off in the business world, I had a little sign posted in my office that read “I Get Shit Done” and served as a constant reminder that I’m here to get shit done, not just learn.
So, time to wrap up this article and GET SHIT DONE.
To your success,
