The Day That Turned My Business Around
It’s a beautiful day out there, so today I took a little time off to unwind and celebrate a few milestones I’ve recently hit in my business life.
It wasn’t more than a few years ago that taking time off was impossible. Even after I started making a decent living, I just felt like I had too much to do. Like there never was enough time.
I kept getting pulled in a million directions, putting out fires, serving clients, and driving my business towards my goals.
Until the teacher became the student.
I was in the middle of a private coaching session with a client, discussing the complexities and intricacies of business, when he looked up at me and said these life changing words…
“He who chases two rabbits catches neither.”
This caught me off guard and left me almost speechless.
That night, I tossed and turned, unable to sleep.
Rather than fight it, I got up, pulled out my notepad and wrote out everything my business was doing, from answering the phone to launching programs, sending emails, ordering supplies, etc.
Everything we did, I wrote it down.
I then divided the activities into two main groups: Growing and Managing.
Growing were all the activities I was doing that were focused on growing my business.
Managing was everything that needed to be done to keep the business afloat or service the clients.
I then took the managing sheet and tossed it (for now).
Its only purpose was to clarify in my mind which activity was what.
Then I took the growing list, and picked ONE activity I thought had the potential to have the greatest impact on my bottom line.
Yeah, yeah, they all help, and it was a tough choice, but I forced myself to pick ONE.
Then I went to bed.
The next morning, I advised my staff that we were dropping everything but this ONE thing. They all gasped, thinking I had finally gone off the deep end.
I convinced them this was the right choice, and we all collectively dove into completing this one task.
And that, my friend, is how I got my business UNSTUCK.
The next 3 months were some of the happiest, most free, relaxing, and financially lucrative months of my business career.
I slept like a baby, I had all the time I wanted for my family, and I was able to not only buy the things I wanted, but actually enjoy them.
I know it feels counter-intuitive, but if I can get one thing across right now it’s this: pick ONE thing in your business, one goal, one activity, one project, and go all in.
Go ahead, you deserve it.
Now to get back to my down time 🙂
