How to Scale Beyond Your Industry
Yesterday, I wrote about focus—and the power of picking one thing and really going after it with everything you’ve got.
And today, I’m going to pull a 180 on you—sort of.
Today, while coaching a client I was reminded of a very important fact, a reason many business owners who achieve a certain amount of success typically end up hitting a “plateau” and rarely break through it.
The reason, the cause of this plateau, is actually quite simple…
It’s because they RARELY get out of their own industry.
You see, a fast food restaurant typically does everything every other fast food restaurant does.
A golf course typically does everything other golf courses do.
A fitness studio typically does everything other fitness studios do.
And so on…
But if you’re going to break through and take your business to new heights, you MUST explore other industries.
Back when I was growing my gym, I’d dedicate an hour a week to researching a different industry’s marketing strategies.
For example, maybe one day I’d search “photography marketing ideas,” and the next I’d search “restaurant marketing ideas,” or even “not for profit marketing ideas.”
You see, many marketing strategies and tactics can be—with a little bit of tweaking—applied to YOUR business.
And odds are VERY good that no one else in your industry is doing it!
If you’ve been in business for a while, odds are you’ve developed “tunnel vision.” You have a set of blinders on. And you’ve probably said things like this to yourself….
“Oh, that doesn’t work for restaurants.”
“Oh, golf courses don’t do that.”
“I wish my industry can do what they are doing.”
And if you’ve been in the same market for a while, you might even have belief systems such as…
“My market won’t like that.”
“They’ll never pay X for that.”
“It won’t work in this city.”
Sometimes that may be true, but if you don’t CHALLENGE those beliefs, you’re probably leaving TONS of money on the table.
I challenge you to adopt FUNNEL vision, where you let everything come in, and filter it down into a plan of action.
It’s funny, when I’m working with a new prospective client, inevitably they’ll ask something like, “Well, what experience do you have in my industry”—as if it’s a BAD thing if I have none…
But the opposite is actually true.
Because I’m not “in your industry,” I don’t bring the same limiting beliefs to the table, and instead I bring a vast array of ideas, strategies, and tactics from all types of industries—and they very often yield FANTASTIC results.
Today, get out of your office, get out of your little world, and soak in what others are doing—you might be quite surprised!
