A Small Rant About Business and Social Media
I’ve been seeing way too much of this, and I figure since we’re all business owners in here, or aspiring entrepreneurs, it’s the best place to voice my thoughts…
MOST, I’d be willing to say 90%, of businesses do NOT use social media properly. (And I’m going to say “Facebook” often, but it applies to all social media)
In fact, they do it completely wrong.
Heck, they butcher their page. And I’m not talking about visually.
I’m talking about the stuff they actually post. And unfortunately, a lot of independent sales reps or small mom-and pop shops, which happen to be the group with the most power over this, are the ones who really screw up.
So what are they doing wrong?
They’re selling life insurance at a funeral.
Have you ever heard that saying? It’s used in business when someone is doing something that’s very cringe worthy.
Here’s the thing…
When you go out, let’s say, to the bar, and you’re at the counter, just enjoying your drink, when you look over and make eye contact with someone and give a simple smile, just something to break the ice and say “hey, I might be interested in learning more”
That’s like someone landing on your companies Facebook page.
They may or might not be interested long term, but for the moment, they’re open to seeing what you have to offer.
So, this new individual across the bar gets up and starts making their way towards you and engages you in conversation.
Now let me ask you this…
How long would you entertain a conversation with this individual (a.k.a your business) if they never once talked about you, and spent the entire time talking about themselves, their business, and told you about their specials, discounts, new offers and continually asked you to come in and buy.
Would you stick around, or run for the exit?
Everyone would run. There isn’t a soul reading this that would stick around and listen to a pitch fest. YET that’s what many do all day long on their Facebook!!
Let me ask you a really tough question…
What is Facebook?
Well, it’s social media, isn’t it?
Is it “networking media”? Or “Sales media” ? Or “Pitch Media”?
No.
It’s SOCIAL media.
The whole goal of Facebook is to be SOCIAL, to engage, to interact, to have fun, to laugh, to cry, and to just be social!
Facebook is the online equivalent of a bar or pub. It’s a place to be social. So why aren’t businesses being social?
Here, try this…
The next time you’re face to face with a lead, heck even a nice warm lead for your business, pull out your phone, open your companies Facebook page, and read or show everything you’ve posted.
Will they stick around?
Will they feel engaged?
Will they want to learn more?
Will they want to buy?
Or will they think “man, chill dude!” and leave. Or unfollow. Or kill the notifications.
See with Facebook you don’t need to tell a business you’re annoyed, you simply unfollow. And the beauty is you can still “LIKE” a page, making the business owner think “hey check out all my likes!” yet unfollow it and get ZERO of the post in your newsfeed.
Engagement is key.
Don’t be fooled by hundreds, thousands or tens of thousands of page likes if less than 1% of the people are engaging with you, liking your content, sharing, commenting, and interacting with you.
My agency spends a fair amount of time teaching this to clients and we’re always blown away at how many simply never thought about it this way
Now I know what you’re thinking…
But what do I say? What do I post? Coming up with creative content to post every day is hard work and takes a LOT of time!
That’s what separates the greats from the averages. They understand that every company is a MEDIA company, regardless of what product or service you sell, you’re a media company and what you put out DOES have an effect on your business.
So, regardless of how hard it is, or how much time it takes, if you care about the future of your business, you need to make time. Or, of course, do like many do… they hire us to create all the content for them
It really doesn’t matter what you do, whether you do it yourself, hire someone else or hire us, it NEEDS to be done. In today’s day and age, a dead Facebook page, or a page packed with sales crap, WILL hurt you.
And as a small business owner, as an entrepreneur, you have the ultimate upper hand on big corporations. You can make this change TODAY and get a head start.
Always remember, it’s SOCIAL media

PS – If you know someone making this major social media mistake, be a friend and share the knowledge with them by sharing 🙂
