Good evening everyone!
I just finished a long chat with a client on the importance of strategy – and how MOST businesses have absolutely NO strategy.
Let me start by asking you this?
Have you ever ran an ad in the paper?
Have you ever had a billboard?
Have you ever ran a radio campaign?
Have you ever ran a television ad?
Have you ever passed out flyers?
Put coupons on cars?
Offered a sale?
Asked for a referral or testimonial?
Etc.
Essentially, have you ever done anything in your business – and more specifically, anything marketing related?
If yes, then the even bigger question is: What was your strategy around that marketing tactic?
This client was going on and on about all the things he’s done with his businesses before, from taking his products downtown Sudbury to show them off to the public, to run ads just about everywhere and throw money at anyone that offered some kind of marketing.
And because he never took the time to design a strategic plan, this went on for years. Now, luckily, this did pay off to some extent, he made his fortune and all is well, but having been in business for nearly 20 years now he’s realized that had he taken the time to have a strategic marketing plan, he could have 10x’ed his results, his profits and cut his time and expenses in half.
MOST businesses are jumping from one random marketing tactic, i.e. running an ad, to another with absolutely zero strategy. Oh sure, the goals is to make a sale right? Or to get the client to call. Or to have them walk in. Or to brand your name. That’s garbage, those are the answers amateurs give – or someone who’s trying to make a commission from selling you a big fancy ad campaign. The truth is, making a sale is NOT strategy, it’s simply the obvious initial goal. But how will you ensure that they eventually come in, make a purchase, invite their friends, spread the word, purchase the upsells, give a testimonial, purchase again, purchase even more, and be loyal for life? Have you planned that? Or are you just hoping that happens?
Did you set up systems to make sure all the crucial steps in building your empire are taken, or are you just hoping the happen, or that you won’t forget, or worst your staff doesn’t do it – or not properly.
Or are you okay with having to go out and drum up business constantly?
Or was the plan to blame the economy, the weather, the competition, the market, etc?
And if you have a plan, is it automatic, is it a system, is it measurable?
I’ve said this a million times, having a strategic marketing plan is the DIFFERENCE between mediocrity and millions, between small business and major empire, between penny’s and palaces, between paycheck to paycheck, and financial freedom.
Listen, don’t run another ad, don’t make another post on social media, don’t hand out another flyer, don’t make another phone call and don’t send out another email until you’ve taken the time to set up a solid strategy! Oh, and don’t be fooled. The reason no one takes the time to sculpt a fortune creating strategy is because it’s TOUGH. But like most things, it’s doing the things most won’t do that builds the fortunes most don’t have.
