I’m in town from camp for a few hours while the kids are at a birthday party so I though I’d take a minute to teach you a great marketing strategy I use to get loads of leads for nearly free!
This strategy is great if you’re trying to reach college/university prospects. I use variations of this idea for elementary and high schools, but for the sake of this post, I’ll be talking about colleges and universities.
We all know September is back to school, and I always laugh when all the local, usually small, businesses starts marketing “Back to school” after Labor Day…I mean, don’t you think there’s a reason all the big businesses, the Staples, the Walmart’s, etc. start pushing “Back to school” in August? And often even July?!
If you wait until September to start promoting, you’re already behind and probably won’t see anywhere near the impact and results your efforts should bring you. Remember my blog about the Water Pump Theory? Those pumping are WAY ahead of the others. If you missed it, read it HERE.
Anyhow, back at the ranch…
What I usually do is reach out to all the colleges and universities in my area and ask if they are giving out any frosh kits, student welcome kits, or things like that and mention that you’d like to make a donation to the kits to help get the students started on the right foot and welcome them to the school/city.
Now here’s the thing, typically there are SEVERAL different sections of the school giving out welcome kits. For example, usually the student council or student board gives out their version, the school itself might give out a kit, the engineering group might give out a kit, the dental division might give out some kits, etc. You’ll want to reach out to as many of these different groups, clubs and organizations as possible and offer to donate to their kits.
Heck, typically there are hundreds of little clubs like the chess club, the beer club, the karate club, etc. within a school that would LOVE to welcome new club members with a gift that cost them absolutely nothing.
From there, it’s really simple, find out how many they need, put them together and drop them off!
I usually like to donate services, or something really LOW in cost. The last thing you want to do is donate something that’ll put you in the red. Unless, of course you’ve taken some of our strategic consulting and know what you’re doing and willing to use a loss-leader to profit BIG TIME on the back end.
Keep in mind that you want to reach out to these groups and clubs nice and early. Sure, many won’t respond until mid-august once they’re back from their holidays, but you want to stay at the top of their to-do list and get in before they fill up or get bombarded typical back to school stuff.
Anyhow, I better get back to the family!
Always remember, reading this won’t help you in any way. You need to get out there and actually APPLY it!
To your success,
