Do you have prospects telling you they see you everywhere? Are you at the top of your prospects minds all the time? Do you stay in front of your potential clients constantly?
One major mistake I see many businesses make is marketing when they have to. Let me explain…
Have you ever used an old hand water pump? If you have, you’ll be able to relate… Basically, when you want water, you need to pump, and pump, and pump, and keep on pumping, for what feels like hours, with absolutely nothing to show for it, until finally out of nowhere water starts flowing strong and now the pumping is almost effortless and the water will keep on flowing strong for as long as you pump. BUT, if you stop even for just a second, the flow stops, and you need to start all over again.
That, my friends, is a very accurate description of business and marketing.
You see, when people are just starting off and are launching their businesses, they work. They try everything. They run ads. They pass flyers. They post on social media. They call the papers. They talk to just about everyone they can and introduce themselves everywhere. Then, after some solid effort, business starts flowing in, the phone starts ringing and the cash register starts chinging. And this is exactly where most businesses get themselves in trouble…
Ever hear the quote “don’t rest on your laurels“? Well, it’s very true here.
Once business starts to pick up and they get busy, many business owners stop doing the very thing (marketing) that got them the business in the first place!
I know it’s tough, you get busy, you’re answering the phone, replying to emails, working your butt off IN the business, putting in 16 hour days and have NO time for marketing…but just like the water pump, once you stop pumping, the flow water eventually stops, and boy, it’s a real pain to get it started again. In fact, it’s SUBSTANTIALLY easier to just keep pumping nice and easy then it is to start all over again.
And here’s the worst part… There’s a “delay”.
Far too many people wait until the business has just about dried up, they wait until the cash is almost out, they wait until business has all but stopped before they realize “hey, maybe I should start marketing again!”. But now they’ve forgotten about the “initial pumping” it takes before the water flows. And if you waited until you were desperately out of cash before you started pumping, boy it’s tough to start putting money into marketing and sitting around waiting for cashflow.
If you own your own business, you need to understand something…
YOU ARE A MARKETING COMPANY, that does_________________________ (insert what you do here).
You aren’t a law office, a fitness studio, a pizza joint, a dental office…
You are a marketing company that practices law, you’re a marketing company that offers fitness solutions, you’re a marketing company that provides pizza, you’re a marketing company that provides dental services, etc.
The sooner you accept this, the sooner you can step into the 1% that live life on their terms, and step away from the 99% that are living paycheck to paycheck.
So, keep your marketing river flowing, keep the pressure on, stay in front of your prospects and clients eyes.
If you’re hearing folks say “I see you guys everywhere!”, you’re on the right track.
More on this later, we need to talk about Seed Marketing next 🙂
To your success,
