When I had a business in the fitness industry doing one on one consulting with clients looking to lose weight, I would tell them that in order for them to truly lose weight and transform in a sustainable and permanent manner, someone is going to have to die.
Shocked, they’d gasp and ask what I meant.
I went on to explain that there’s a person inside them that’s preventing them from living the life they deserve. They’ve got a voice inside that says “you can’t do this”, “you’ll always be fat”, “you just look at cake and gain weight”, “you’re not strong enough”, “you have no willpower”, “all you do is fail”, etc.
And that voice, that person, needs to die.
They simply CANNOT make permanent, lasting change with a deep voice constantly telling them they can’t do it.
The same applies with your business – but instead of saying someone needs to die, I call it “breaking UP“.
Without a doubt, no matter how GREAT your business is doing, or how poorly things are going, there are things – habits, mental glass ceilings, doubts, beliefs – that are holding you up and until you break up with them, you can never go UP.
One of the first things I do when I start working with a new business is I evaluate what they are currently doing. I talk to customers, I talk to staff, I perform some corporate espionage, I book meetings, I brush off meetings, I call, I email, I get upset, and I observe everything that goes on.
I look at how staff react, I look at how they follow up, I look at their consistency, I look at culture, I look at happiness, I look at systems (present or lacking), I look at efficiency, I look at belief systems, etc.
Often, I uncover a list of things the c-suite either was unaware, was turning a blind eye, or was aware but unsure of how bad it was or how to fix it.
From there, we formulate a plan and work the plan.
Regardless of size, every company has global beliefs that hold them back (my industries different, my town is different, we can’t do that, etc) yet those beliefs are largely “made up” and, once challenged or removed, open up the doors to massive unseen profits. Major companies make it a habit to regularly challenge global beliefs and often allocate divisions with the sole purpose of trying new things.
I’m reminded of a story of a business man who was on the board of a MAJOR global company, and whom had just made a tremendous innovation that was going to profit quite handsomely.
When asked how he “knew” what to do, he said this:
“We have a rule in our board that’s very simple, every time we bring forth a new idea, one person is designated to do the exact opposite. There are no repercussions and they don’t get faulted for it, but they must try with all their might to make the opposite work. For this new development, I was that designated opposer so I did what I had to do, I create the opposite of what the other 99% voted for, and it just happens I got it right!”
Imagine if you had a small side gig in your business where you tested the opposite of what you’re currently doing…
Here’s what I do in MY business… (because, let’s face it… it’s easier to pick holes in someone elses business than your own!) Anytime I get an idea, and my gut reaction is “I can’t do that” I challenge that thought. I ask myself “but what if we COULD do that?” and I play it out. I think about the worst things that could happen, and the best things that could happen, and I play the odds.
Often, the more I play around with the potential of DOING that thing I thought I couldn’t, the more it starts to make perfect sense. And then I DO it! As always, action trumps all.
In business, it’s really quite simple: Don’t TALK about it, BE about it.
And of course, don’t be afraid to stir the pot, to upset people or even lose customers. Often it’s your very own current customers that are standing in the way of even better clients. It’s hard to land million dollar accounts when you’re still sleeping with dogs.
Whatever you do, always remember that you never want to be TOO BUSY DRIVING to stop and GET GAS.
Take a look at your business, and break up with limiting beliefs that are holding you back.
Break free, and go UP.
It’s time for a break up.
