Your ability to keep your eyes on the prize makes all the difference.
Last week, my wife and I were out of town doing some Christmas shopping, and the traffic was, well, exactly what is to be expected.
Lesson 1 – Don’t be shocked by things that are expected, it’s just silly.
City traffic around dinner time is always messy. Throw in any major holiday or event and you’ve got yourself a gridlock. It happens every time, and will continue to happen.
While my wife and I were waiting to get out of the shopping center parking lot (which was a solid hour wait), we witnessed all kinds of honking, hand gesturing, and verbal disputes. But what I found amusing was that people treated this traffic jam as some kind of a surprise, like they didn’t see it coming. See, now that just looks foolish.
Certain things in life are to be expected, and a traffic jam right before Christmas is one of those things. And since it’s to be expected, not a surprise, a negative reaction just seems, well, silly.
My wife and I knew it would be packed, knew we’d be sitting around waiting, so we kept ourselves busy with conversation and laughter.
Eventually, we got out of the shopping center and decided, since we were in no rush, that we’d take the back roads to leave town instead of hitting the highways which were sure to be jammed.
We pulled over, loaded the GPS on our phone and took a quick peek at the map. Just as I figured, there was a road that seemed to run straight from where we were to where we wanted to go (about an hour drive).
We bought some snacks and hit the road.
Well, it wasn’t 20 minutes in before we had to pull out the GPS again. The road wasn’t straight at all, and we had to make about 15 lefts and rights before arriving to our destination.
So what happened? Why did the road look straight?
Because I didn’t zoom in.
Lesson 2 – Life may look like a straight line from a distance, but zoom in and you’ll see there are twists and turns everywhere.
I think a lot of people get discouraged in all areas of life—from relationships, to business, to parenting, to going fishing, etc.—because they think it’s going to be a nice, straight line.
Graduate school, start a career, meet that special someone, get married, have kids, retire, and live happily ever after.
If only…
Truth is, if we zoom in on life, in any area, you’ll see there are turns throughout the journey. When we’re “in it” or “in the moment” we might see that turn as a roadblock, a permanent blow to your journey, a change into the wrong direction, and that might make many want to give up.
But if you only took a step back, zoomed out and forgot about the immediate problem or turn in front of you, and saw the big picture, you’d see that the goal is still up ahead, and that the twists and turns are all part of the journey.
So this holiday season, take some time to plan out your 2017, set your goals for the year, know where you want to go, and get your mind right. Get your mind prepared for the twists and turns, the obstacles that will invariably come up, and never lose sight of the goal, of your destination.
I’m not sure if there are any NASCAR fans here, but when a driver is in “training camp,” they use a special car that, at the push of a button, lifts up one of the wheels which sends the car into a whirling spin, and the driver must learn to regain control of the car.
The biggest challenge they have with new drivers is getting them to keep their eyes on the road, on where they WANT to go, and OFF the wall they desperately want to avoid crashing into.
Their ability to focus on where they want to go, and not where they don’t want to go, can make or break a driver’s career.
Your career is no different.
No matter what, keep your eye on the goal, and not the wall.
Life is full of twists, turns, walls, and speed bumps but don’t ever lose sight of the big picture, of your where you want to go.
Keep your eyes on the prize.
To your success,
Al
